Does a playlist transfer keep the date-added order?

Updated

Quick answer

Partly. Transfer tools copy songs in the playlist's order, but the original dates don't come across. On the new service, every track shows the day you ran the transfer as its date added.

That's because a tool can only add songs to your new account. It can't write a past date onto them, so sorting by Date Added on Qobuz or Tidal afterward just shows the order the tool added them in.

Playlist order is the part you can keep. FreeYourMusic says its transfers match the order of the source playlist, with one twist: Spotify's Liked Songs list puts the newest songs at the top, so it reverses that list during the transfer to stop the order coming out scrambled. Soundiiz and TuneMyMusic don't document how they handle order.

A few ways to hold onto your history:

  1. Before you switch, sort the source playlist or favorites by date added. Tools read the order the service gives them.
  2. Export a CSV backup of the source playlist first, so you have a record of the original order to compare against.
  3. After the transfer, use custom order (not Date Added) on the new service, since that one reflects the order you copied.

Favorites and saved albums are the hardest case. They usually have no custom order at all, so expect them to sort by transfer date.
