What does "Something Went Wrong" mean in an Apple Music transfer?

Updated

Quick answer

It's a catch-all error, and Apple's only official advice is to check that your device is online and tap Try Again. Apple doesn't say what else triggers it.

That fix comes straight from Apple's transfer support page. Since the transfer runs through a third party (SongShift) and signs in to your other service, a dropped connection or a timeout on either side can end in this message.

If Try Again doesn't help, work through these:

  1. Switch from cellular to Wi-Fi, or the other way around, and retry.
  2. Check for a pending Needs Review list. You can't start a new transfer on that device until you finish it.
  3. Update iOS, iPadOS or the Android Apple Music app, then restart the device.
  4. Try a different entry point. If the phone keeps failing, go to music.apple.com, click your photo, and choose Transfer Music.
  5. Transfer fewer playlists at once.

If the source service is grayed out with a busy notice instead, see our Spotify Currently Busy guide. When it keeps failing for a day or more, a web tool like TuneMyMusic or Soundiiz can move the same playlists into Apple Music without Apple's transfer at all.
